Africa Jobs Fund has invested in Velocity, a labour mobility company that trains African nurses in German and places them in jobs at German hospitals.
The investment will support Velocity’s expansion into Malawi and Zambia.
Africa Jobs Fund seeks to invest in companies that can create jobs at scale for Africans and raise incomes. It focuses on two areas: international labour mobility and export manufacturing.
Velocity was founded by Lalit Kumar, Siddharth Gusain and Betty Chelangat, and launched in Kenya in June 2025.
The company takes qualified nurses, teaches them German to the B2 standard that German employers and regulators require, and works with placement partners who match them with hospitals.
Kenya, Malawi and Zambia all have significant numbers of unemployed nurses. According to the Nursing Council of Kenya, more than 40% of registered nurses are unemployed or underemployed.
A nurse in Malawi with a four-year degree and several years of ward experience earns about MWK 475,000 a month, or around €117 at current parallel-market exchange rates, according to Africa Jobs Fund. By comparison, the fund said a Malawian nurse placed in a German hospital would start on about €2,500 a month as a nursing aide, rising to about €3,500 a month after passing the German registration exam, typically within six to nine months.
