African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), through its IDEAS Managed Fund, is participating in the consortium that has reached financial close on the new 15-year Gautrain concession in South Africa.
AIIM is investing through the AIIM-Motseng joint venture, which forms part of Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM), the consortium awarded the Post-2026 Gautrain Concession.
The IDEAS Managed Fund, AIIM’s flagship rand-denominated Southern African infrastructure equity fund, holds a 51% interest in the AIIM-Motseng joint venture. Motseng Investment Holdings owns the remaining 49%.
Other members of SSM include Alstom, RATP Dev, GIBB-Crede, AIH Connect and SSM InvestCo.
The concession runs from 2026 to 2041 and covers the operation, maintenance and refurbishment of the Gautrain and its integrated feeder-bus network.
It was procured under South Africa’s public-private partnership framework and is contracted with the Gautrain Management Agency on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government.
The Gautrain links Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport. Under the new concession, SSM will be responsible for operating and maintaining the existing system and undertaking refurbishment work during the concession period.
The new concession became effective on 28 September 2026.
“The Gautrain has become an important part of Gauteng’s economic and transport infrastructure. As Sihamba Sonke Mobility, we recognise the responsibility that comes with taking stewardship of an asset of this significance. Our focus is on ensuring continuity, maintaining the standards commuters have come to expect and investing in the system so that it can continue to serve the people and economy of Gauteng for many years to come,” says Vuyo Ntoi, co-managing director of AIIM.
