DealMakers AFRICA 2021 | Nominees – Private Equity Deal of the Year
The following are those EAST AFRICA and WEST AFRICA deals shortlisted for the Private Equity Deal of the Year 2021 awards. These transactions were selected from the nominations submitted by the M&A industry advisers.
They are, in no particular order:
EAST AFRICA
Adenia Partners’ majority acquisition of Red Lands Roses
Private markets investment firm Adenia Partners acquisition of a majority stake in the premier exporter of high-quality roses in Kenya will enable Red Lands to grow its production capacity, increase its market share and venture into new global flower markets.
Advisers to the deal were: Horizon Africa Capital, ENSafrica (Kenya) and Bowmans.
Acquisition of East African Hotel portfolio by Actis
The sale by City Lodge Hotels of three hotels in Nairobi, Kenya – Fairview Hotel, City Lodge Hotel at Two Rivers and Town Lodge Upper Hill and the City Lodge Hotel Dar es Salaam in Tanzania marks the entry for Actis into the hotel market in East Africa. For City Lodge the sale was prompted by the need to reduce debt levels and eliminate operating losses.
Advisers to the deal were: ENSafrica (Kenya) and A&K Tanzania.
WEST AFRICA
Partial exit by DPI of a 31% stake in Food Concepts to ACA
Africa Capital Alliance has acquired a 31% stake in the West African food retailing company with a focus on the Quick Service Restaurant Sector in Nigeria and Ghana from Development Partners International who will remain the controlling shareholder. The strategic partnership will take Food Concepts to the next phase of growth, that of regional expansion.
Advisers to the deal were: Stanbic IBTC Capital, Norton Rose Fulbright, BCLP, Banwo & Ighodalo and Templars.
Disinvestment by Actis of Mouka
The disposal of the Nigerian mattresses and bedding products manufacturer and distributer by Actis and Faiz Moukarim family to Development Partners International and Moroccan mattress maker Uni Confor Africa was announced in December 2021. The US$60 million deal is set to create a pan-African leader.
