Sahel Capital, an investment manager specialising in the food and agriculture sectors across sub-Saharan Africa, has closed a $560,000 working capital loan in Mariseth, through its Social Enterprise Fund for Agriculture in Africa (SEFAA).
Mariseth operates across several regions, aggregating a variety of crops – including soya beans, rice, maize, and palm fruit – from smallholder farmers and supplying them to FMCG companies in Ghana. The company plays a key role in enabling consistent and fair market access for these farmers, who are often underpaid by traditional aggregators.
Since its inception, Mariseth has created market opportunities for over 8,000 farmers by engaging them before and during the planting season, helping to improve their productivity and secure better prices for their produce compared to what they would earn through typical aggregation channels.
“Mariseth plays a critical role in improving income outcomes for female farmers in Ghana. During our due diligence, we discovered that the company had onboarded and provided fair market access to more than 6,800 female farmers. This milestone is the result of an inclusive and intentional strategy championed by Mariam Ofori, who has led the business since 2016. Ahead of last year’s planting season, Mariseth partnered closely with farmers to ensure the use of improved seeds, which helped mitigate the impact of droughts on their harvests. These efforts strongly align with SEFAA’s mission – not only to safeguard the backbone of Africa’s food system but also to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across the continent,” said Deji Adebusoye, partner at Sahel Capital.
Renaissance Law Chambers advised SEFAA on this transaction.
