Grounded Investment Company (GIC) has closed an investment in Mama Cashew, a cashew processing company based in Mtwara, southern Tanzania. GIC is an impact investment cooperative focused on the food industry.
Mama Cashew began processing cashews in 2021. The business is run by founding partners Maria Verschoof and George Hokororo. The company sources from approximately 2,000 smallholder farmers.
The business has Fairtrade certification and longstanding relationships with its local supply base.
GIC said its equity investment will support targeted capital expenditure upgrades and provide greater flexibility in day-to-day cash flow. The investment is also intended to strengthen Mama Cashew’s balance sheet.
