IFLR confirms Bowmans status as leading multi-jurisdictional adviser in Africa
Leading African law firm, Bowmans, has been confirmed as the top multi-jurisdictional M&A adviser in Africa at IFLR’s inaugural awards for Sub-Saharan Africa.
The firm received 10 awards across four jurisdictions including being named Tanzania Firm of the Year, Uganda Firm of the Year, and being recognised as the overall M&A Team of the Year.
Bowmans was acknowledged for:
– advising on the Domestic Deal of the Year (Commercial Bank of Africa and NIC Bank transaction) in four jurisdictions: Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda;
– advising on the M&A Deal of the Year (American Tower Corporation and Eaton Towers Africa transaction) in two jurisdictions: Kenya and Uganda; and
– being the M&A Firm of the Year in South Africa.
Chairman and senior partner Robert Legh says, ‘These results are extremely gratifying. In September four years ago, we announced our one firm approach to delivering legal services in Africa. What these awards highlight is that we’ve been working together, across our geographical footprint, to help our clients with their most complex and legally challenging matters – which is exactly what we set out to do.’
According to IFLR, the awards recognise, ‘the most legally innovative deals of 2019-20 from across the region and the firms and lawyers behind them’. The research organisation highlights that its focus for the Sub-Saharan Africa Awards was ‘exclusively on transactions that break new legal ground, set market precedents, or introduce new innovations to the legal toolkit’.
Legh continues, ‘We are steadily working towards achieving our vision of building the pre-eminent African law firm, supporting our clients and our people, as they seek to unlock opportunity, overcome challenges and realise the hopes that will shape the future of Africa.’
In the past year Bowmans has made some bold moves into new jurisdictions with the stated intention of being better able to support its clients wherever they do business on the continent. The firm opened offices in Mauritius in September last year and in Malawi and Zambia in June this year. It also entered into formal alliances with Aman Assefa Associates Law Office (AAALO) in Ethiopia in September last year and with Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie (UUBO) in Nigeria earlier this month.
