Impact fund invests in Kenya's FarmMoja
ADAP Capital LLC, through its ADAP Fund 2, has announced an investment in FarmMoja. Based in Kericho, Kenya, FarmMoja provides training and inputs for smallholder farmers to get more efficient market access.
“The investment from ADAP Capital comes at a critical time for us as a business as we deliver more innovative agricultural technologies that boost farm productivity, fundamentally changing the current sales opportunities for smallholder farmers,” said Kevin Kibet Mochama, founder and managing director.
FarmMoja has piloted its initial model in the Kericho region, working with hundreds of farmers, utilising its demonstration farm for research, practical learning and skills training. Incorporating intercropping potential and greater crop diversification is at the centre of the FarmMoja process. Despite accounting for 75% of the total food produced and 60% of the produce exported by the country, approximately 56% of smallholder farmers in Kenya are still trapped in poverty with 51% being food insecure during certain periods of the year. This negative economic impact is largely due to the use of limited technology, poor inputs and lack of well-defined market opportunities.
