Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) provided an integrated financing solution for Sihamba Sonke Mobility, the new concessionaire appointed to operate, maintain, upgrade and modernise the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link System under a 15-year Public Private Partnership concession with the Gauteng Provincial Government. The financial close paves the way for R9 billion ($539.9 million) in investment to operate, maintain, upgrade and modernise the Gautrain.
Sihamba Sonke Mobility reached financial close on the financing for the new Gautrain concession, with support from Standard Bank.
The transaction marks the next phase in the development of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link System, almost 20 years after Standard Bank arranged and closed the financing for the original project in January 2007.
The Gautrain services Gauteng Province and currently connects key economic nodes including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport. Since commencing operations in 2010, the system has supported mobility, economic activity and regional connectivity across the province.
Under the new 15-year Public Private Partnership concession with the Gauteng Provincial Government, Sihamba Sonke Mobility will operate, maintain, upgrade and modernise the existing Gautrain system.
Standard Bank acted as Sole Mandated Lead Arranger, Underwriter, Hedge Provider, Account Bank, Performance Bond Issuer, Facility Agent and Security Agent. The Bank underwrote the entire debt package and brought together capabilities across Investment Banking, Transaction Banking and Global Markets to deliver an integrated financing and risk management solution.
The financial close paves the way for R9 billion ($539.9 million) in investment to operate, maintain, upgrade and modernise the Gautrain. Planned investment includes the refurbishment of 24 existing trainsets, procurement of eight new trainsets, signalling and communications upgrades, digitalisation of the fare collection platform, station upgrades, renewable energy initiatives and replacement of the feeder bus fleet.
The successful close reinforces Standard Bank’s longstanding commitment to South Africa’s infrastructure development agenda and builds on the Bank’s historic involvement in the original Gautrain financing. The transaction also strengthens relationships across the consortium, including AIIM-Motseng, Alstom, RATP Dev, GIBB-CREDE and AWCA Investment Holdings.
This landmark transaction demonstrates how long-term partnerships, sector expertise and integrated financing capabilities can support the continued operation and modernisation of strategic public infrastructure. Standard Bank CIB continues to work with clients and partners across Africa to structure financing solutions that enable connectivity, economic growth and sustainable infrastructure development.
